The patch is no longer needed.
I was not able to reproduce the failure at -j8. It sounds like a classic
race condition. I think the right approach is to add a note that if make
fails using multiple cores to rerun make at -j1.
Also I checked the instructions for readline and it appears that the chmod
command is no longer needed. All the results said: mode of '<library>'
retained as 0755 (rwxr-xr-x)
