 Well, the time-correction was obviously caused by ntpd, but the basic
problem seems to be related to CONFIG_DEVFS_FS (yeughh, where did I pick
up _that_ crap ?).  Dunno if the problem is new to 2.6.12-rc, or if it
has been there for some time - it looks as if the system _sometimes_
boots with a random time (e.g. my kernel before the current one booted
with a time approx 29.5 hours slow).

 I'm provisionally blaming devfs, and since that is about to become
defunct there's no point looking more deeply.
