Hello!
I recently bought an external hard-drive, connecting it to various
computers via USB and FW works like charm, everything fine on that
side. But, I ran into serious trouble when it came to partitioning and
chosing a filesystem. Well, again, it's not a problem to do that, but
the question is, what is the smart way?
The problem is perhaps more philosophically, I don't see the point in
having all the usual permissions on an external HD. It will be attached
to different boxes which have different user-mappings, which --- under
certain circumstances --- will prevent me from reading my own files from
the extHD. That's of course no problem as long as I can become root, but
that's not the case for all boxes. Also, security is not really enforced
by having restrictive access rules for the files, security will be
implemented with encryption when needed.
It would be possible to give rw (rwx) to everyone for all files
(dirs) on the extHD, but that's an extra step which will be forgotten
when needed most. I haven't looked at the different mount-options, but
again, that'll only help me with boxes where I have the permissions to
do that.
Additionally I'd like to be able to access the data via (ugh)
Windows, though I could live without that. I fear that this would
narrow me down to FAT32? NTFS would be a nicer option, but afaik it's
not possible to have rw access to NTFS partition with Linux? I found a
way to access ext2/3 partitions via Windows, but it's read-only and not
very comfortable (I thought in having a tiny FAT-partition with these
tools, which can then be used on any arbitrary Win-Box to mount the real
data partition).
Does anyone have experience and a smart way to handle external HDs?
I'd be happy for any input, any idea, philosophy, etc. Any suggestions
for useful filesystems for external (mobile) storage containers?
TIA,
Steffen
