Taking all but the last two words of the subject, and that sentence,
I'd really recommend taking a peek at busybox
<URL:http://www.busybox.net/>. Combined with uClibc
<URL:http://www.uclibc.org/>, they let you build a full base system
on the cheap --- c. 700KB with nearly everything enabled, built for
x86. One statically-linked executable, with c. 100 links to it from
/bin and /sbin, then add a kernel and you have a healthy Unix.
