iTunes seems pretty popular over on the Windows side, and as I understand is 
the most similar thing to amaroK -- which is, of course, the holy grail of 
music players.

For more minimalism, I remember hearing talk about Media Player Classic, which 
is an open source clone of Windows Media Player before it went all bloated.  
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/  That's music + video, though.
