Hello,

My name is Stef.
Since some weeks now I'm trying to find out if there are any
rules/procedures to handle utmp.

I've been looking at the code of login (part of the shadow package) and kdm
(part of kdebase).
They handle utmprecords different.
Login does look for a record, already created by init, and updates that
record. I can see that happen, but why is that?
KDM does not look for any records, and so does not update any thing.

When user is logged in with login, a new record is created in the utmp
database, but with the pid of the login process, not with the pid of the
application of what the user is doing ( a shell for example).

When user is logged in with KDM, also a new record is created, but then with
the pid of what the user is doing! For example /bin/sh startkde.

This is different!
Does anybody know about how UTMP, or where I can find documentation about
it?

I've posted already on the shadow maillist, but no reply!
