It is the Gautama Buddha's birthday next Friday, May 5th, according to the
Chinese calendar, or May 13th (three Saturdays from now) if you go by the
lunar calendar. These dates are both Christmas and Easter for Buddhists
because the Gautama Buddha is believed to have been enlightened, and died, on
his birthday. A common way to celebrate is to eat no meat, or animal
products, on that day. Most big city Buddhist communities have parades and
ceremonies too. If you go to a parade, try to bring some fruit as a gift for
the Buddha. Parades can also include delicious Buddhist food.
