Just booted 2.6.17-rc5 to see if I can get anywhere with snd-aoa,
and the cursor works correctly from the start. I guess framebuffers
are fragile things (that's why they are marked as experimental on
many arches), and easily upset by kernel changes.

Switching to tty2 and back did solve the early cursor prob, and so did
using the vesa fb rather than the nvidia one, so I guess that issue is
with the nv driver... It also seemed to fix the missing cursor in
console based ViM.
As for in xterm, I didn't notice any problems using the vesa driver. Yet...
