Actually, I've now found my original (unanswered) query to
linux-usb-users - at that time I'd used kernels back to 2.6.12
during attempted installations, and all showed the problem, so maybe
this has always been b0rked.

I've just booted mine (2.6.17-rc5) without the mac keyboard
attached (damn handy for emergencies when I break the bootloader
and can't open the CD drive without it) and I get the following:

usbcore: registered new driver libusual
usbcore: registered new driver hiddev
usbhid 2-1:1.0: usb_probe_interface
usbhid 2-1:1.0: usb_probe_interface - got id
input: USBPS2 as /class/input/input0
input: USB HID v1.00 Keyboard [USBPS2] on usb-0001:01:0b.0-1
usbhid 2-1:1.1: usb_probe_interface
usbhid 2-1:1.1: usb_probe_interface - got id
input: USBPS2 as /class/input/input1
input: USB HID v1.00 Mouse [USBPS2] on usb-0001:01:0b.0-1
usbcore: registered new driver usbhid
drivers/usb/input/hid-core.c: v2.6:USB HID core driver

I didn't think PS/2 devices were capable of passing identities, but
I would expect a KVM to simulate a mouse and keyboard, so getting a
real identity, even on all-usb, is probably a lot to hope for.
