Well done Ian. Welcome to the wunder-fool world of home-built software.
There isn't much difference between -rc1 and the release, check the
changelogs, but I'd not worry much.

Be warned that BLFS is only just started on the process of
upgrade to full lfs-6.4 compatibility.  Take it slow, read the words,
and be prepared to backtrack through the dependencies when things go
wrong.  Don't build more than you need.  Keep build logs.

The Xorg in BLFS right now is 7.2, but 7.4 is out and might be in the
book fairly soon too.  I would advise building 7.2 for experience into
say, /opt/xorg7.2 for now, and then build 7.4 as soon as it's
documented.  Subscribe to BLFS-Dev to follow things as they develop.
