I'm working with an older, low resource computer. Was wondering about the possibility of using an alternative to X Windows or building a lightweight version. If anyone has any tips or pointers to documentation or more information on the subject, would love to hear about it.
For SDL 1.2 based applications, I've been able to run some using directfb without needing X Windows. However, I don't think this will work with all the SDL applications I use. I've also been experimenting with nano-X and it's capable of handling FLTK 1.3 based applications as well as some programs that just use the X or Win32 APIs. Am wondering if there are any Linux distributions that just use nano-X and never bother with X Windows. I've been hearing about Wayland ( http://wayland.freedesktop.org/faq.html ) and it's possible use on Ubuntu, but it doesn't sound like it's ready for general use yet. I've also read about doing minimal X Windows builds such as KDrive, XVesa, etc. Sounds like everything needed to do that is bundled in with X Windows itself, but I haven't been able to dig up any current documentation on how to build a minimal X Windows system that just supports Vesa and SVGA systems. Would be curious if there are other options and also if anyone's had any experience with any of these. Any pointers to more information on this type of thing would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
