If it was me, I would install bind as a caching nameserver and then add 
the "local lan domain" to it.  That would make the name server 
primary/master for your lan addresses and any address that isn't served 
there would then go to the internet.  One crevat is if ppp not up it 
will still try to fetch a url for the internet from ppp if you try to 
browse an internet site/address by mistake,  which will timeout.
