[Just for the record, it's "distro hopping" (not "hoping").]

Arch Linux uses systemd by default, I don't know if it supports other init
systems.

mak umba, you already used Gentoo, so you probably already know that it
uses OpenRC by default, with systemd being an officially supported
alternative. There's a quite strong anti-systemd sentiment in the Gentoo
forums.
Funtoo is a derivative of Gentoo, developed by the original Gentoo's
author, and it's OpenRC-only. I think they did some pretty hard work to
make Gnome usable without systemd (but I don't use Gnome so I can't comment
further).

You may be interested in Bedrock Linux [http://bedrocklinux.org/index.html]:
it's a small distribution that provides a minimal base system, on which you
can install different packages from different distributions. I think it's
super interesting but I didn't have the time to test it yet, and it's still
under heavy development and evolution.

Anyway, as George said, there's no "ultimate", unless you work in the
advertising department ;). Even if you aim for YOUR "ultimate" distro, you
may be forced to face some compromises, for example two pieces of software
may need different incompatible libraries…
