No, I did not. I figured this is an LFS issue more than a BLFS
issue, so I just went ahead and installed PAM and re-installed
shadow without the patch. It works now.

I've not looked at any of the code to see what changes happen when
PAM is installed, but everything works as long as PAM is installed.

And because there's really no point in the BLFS Shadow instructions
unless you install PAM, I didn't install the patch.
