I prefer the solution debian - at least in some packages - uses by
having a /etc/default/PACKAGE (or /etc/sysconfig/... if you prefer) file
with a START_SCRIPTNAME shell variable. One of the advantages is that
there are no configuration files shared by more than one package which
would complicate autonomous system installation / configuration.
