Is there some "de facto" standard used by commercial distros?
Not sure. I just grabbed a gentoo stage3 tarball for amd64 and it seems they have it layed out like this:
/lib -> /lib64 /lib32 /lib64 /usr/lib -> lib64 /usr/lib32 /usr/lib64
