Is there a problem with trying to compile using the latest gcc,
distributed with FC4? (I guess I missed the memo).

This is just a thought and not something I've tried, but FC4 provides gcc 3.2 in the package compat-gcc32. It installs it as /usr/bin/gcc32 I believe. You could use that with the flag CC=gcc32 so you don't have to use all of the gcc 4 patches. Then again, I don't know if LFS builds with gcc 3.2. Something worth looking into if you don't want to scour for patches.
