Do we need hotplug?

The version of udev we have in the development version of the book (udev 063) 
sets itself as the default hotplug event handler (cat /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug) 
so do we need the hotplug scripts? Will they ever be used for anything? Is it 
ever called?
