It works for GCC-3.4.x, GCC-4.x and I feel confident in predicting it
will
continue working well into the future. Of course, the caveat for LFS is
that `sed -i' is not guaranteed to be available for GCC-Pass2.
I think that it is guaranteed there, because it would have barfed
earlier (in glibc Makefiles, unless they fixed that). Anyway, LFS is
faulty here because it doesn't explain the minimum required versions of
host sortware except the kernel.
(and gcc). Point noted, and I realise you've already submitted a bug to
have this dealt with. However, I wonder just how much effort is
required and/or should be put in to discovering and subsequently
documenting the requirements. Is it simply a case of going through
several really old hosts to see which ones can't build chapter 5? Or
were you intending someone basically build an LFS-6.1/unstable system
but replacing each of the packages with old versions until that system
can no longer build LFS? Maybe it would be prudent for folks to just
report things they notice as and when they notice them (like the 'sed
-i' requirement) and we can document them as and when the reports come in?
Regards,
Matt.
