You misunderstand, I think (my fault - superfluous probably wasn't
quite the right word in retrospect). I meant that both lines should be
`pkg-config --variable=...` rather than --prefix=`pkg-config ...` .
You're right, I misunderstood. I made a patch and punted it upstream so we may
not need that text in the book much longer
