You have two approaches.

A) [preferred] Use Debian Sarge or maybe Etch. Rationale:

1) Its minimal install (for a router) is below 70 MB, and doesn't contain development stuff. 2) It has a package manager that allows you to upgrade your system if a security hole is found. 3) Unlike LFS community, Debian community actively reports bugs to the distro maintainers, and thus you have all the latest fixes in Debian packages without waiting for a new upstream release.

B) Roll your own distro by installing LFS on a non-production machine and copying all the needed files to a production one. Be sure that you know how to deal with security updates and other bugs.
