GCC 4.1.0 is supposed to have... issues... with glibc before 2.4.X. In
particular, glibc prior to 2.3.6 can't be compiled with GCC 4
(http://sources.redhat.com/ml/libc-announce/2005/msg00001.html). You
need GCC 3.4.6 or earlier in the 3 series.

The unstable version builds fine with a GCC 4.0.3 compiler (that is,
after all, the GCC version in the book), and AFAIK will build with a
4.1.0 compiler, but, as the name indicates, it's not as stable as the
stable book. As in: you may have to do some bug-fixing, and BLFS and
other packages may not work as expected.
