Jim, are you building gcc and glibc against new headers? gcc-4.1.0
and glibc-2.4. It'll be a short lived build, but I think I've solved
my hardware problems anyway.

Yes, building both GCC 4.1 and Glibc 2.4 with them. I also have a few
others that have built it also.
