At this point I don't remember exactly where it was that I lost confidence as 
to whether I was logged in as the right user.
Never mind, maybe this was just something I missed in the book, rather than any 
lack of clarity in the book itself.

I didn't want to take the "risk" of trashing my boot with a grub accident. And 
since I had a perfectly serviceable grub already my aim was to get LFS up using 
that.

LFS minus the grub seems reasonable to me.
