You're actually reading more into this than there is. There is no "officially supported" filesystem. The ext3 commands in LFS are just an example because ext3 is a widely supported and stable filesystem. In BLFS, reiser and xfs are in there because they're common, not because they have any preference by the editors. You're free to install *LFS on any filesystem that you find to be stable. If you read the LFS page again where the commands for creating a partition are, it says nothing about how you _must_ use ext3. It just says ext3 is the most widely used filesystem.
