I have done some little testing (unfortunately almost no real debugging as time is precious) on the setup that Alexander mentioned. I do suspect that the biggest hindrance there is the multilib setup. Still the point he was making above was about FSF binutils' apparent uselessness on Debian Lenny. The problem with ld on Lenny occurs even with the 64-bit userspace, but disappears when switching to HJL.
