Yeah.  Basically, we haven't upgraded because we're trying to get 6.3
out the door.  ;-)

The issues are that there's a large amount of testing needed for a new
gcc version, and that gcc-4.2.1 has some strange differences from 4.1.2
(one of which is the bootstrap thing you mentioned, but another of which
is that it either takes forever, or takes a ton of memory, to compile
certain files).

There is a branch of the book that Jeremy Huntwork is working on (at
[1]) that uses this version of gcc, but it has a bunch of other changes
too.  (Stuff like being able to build a 64-bit-only system, etc.)  I
suspect we'll end up pulling a lot of stuff from this branch to the real
book for 7.0; after 6.3 is out, the /lfs/view/development/ link on the
website will probably start to include these updates.  See if it lines
up with what you came up with.  :-)

We also have an open ticket for the upgrade to gcc-4.2.1 at [2], so
hopefully we don't forget about it.  ;-)
