Interesting. I knew about 'init q' to reread /etc/inittab, but not about the u option. As a note, I will say that I have done a tar of a complete (minimal) LFS system and then an untar to an empty partition on another system with identical hardware. I then changed a config file (IP Address) and the system booted perfectly.
