Hi Bruce,

When I originally started thinking about #1673, I thought that we'd want
to add a subsection to each packages' page in chapter 6 (probably just a
one-liner underneath the SBU & Disk space measurements, entitled
'Rationale').

I think I like your idea a bit more though, as most packages'
descriptions will be the same; something like 'Core build package;
required for building most other packages'.

So, in your proposal, we'd probably mention that most packages fit this
description, then call out specific exceptions to this, so we'd probably
have less than 10 descriptions in total, I'd think. It may even help us
rationalize our package choices; if we can't think of a reasonable
description of why a package is in the book, it's a good candidate for
removal :-)

It could also arguably go in chapter 3, where the full list of packages
is provided for download.

'Package Choice Rationale' could encompass both the packages we have
selected and the adherence to or divergence from the standards you mention.

As a side note, I can't believe this was raised 4 years ago. Time
flies, eh?

Regards,

Matt.
