Because 4.4.1 has been released, I started another try to setup KDE4. LFS-6.6 is out so a crystal clear and modern basis seems to be a good start for this test again. Btw, X11 works really fine on my T60 now, even without any configuration - nice :-)
Regarding to KDE4, I'm disappointed. It is not the stability - it seems to work well. Its more about the tremendous dependencies. Now, KDE4 depends on Nepomuk (which sources I still not have found) but also on many other libraries. In addition to the ones alleady mentioned, soprano, raptor, rasqal, redland, virtuoso should be there. All new to BLFS. Redland seems to not use Virtuoso unless ODBC(!) headers are available. Is KDE really relying on systems which talk to each other via ODBC? Wow! Maybe that all that semantic desktop stuff is cool today but what happens under the surface of such desktops is really scary to me. Well, I managed to patch and tweak KDE-4.4.1 in a way so that Nepomuk is no showstopper while building but the resulting system is missing much of the PIM stuff, kmail, kontact and others. So it is not the way to leave out Nepomuk. Even kdegraphics relys on Nepomuk. Lots of people said in the past what monsters such Windows(R) desktops are - now KDE4 catched up. With 211 packes installed 5.1GB diskspace is occupied, dunno where all the space has gone. Ok, my /tools dir is still on the disk, subtract 235M and the /sources with just another 250M. What is that kdesupport stuff good for? It should be used as a basis for building KDE. Yes but not qca and oxygen-icons. Still there but newer stuff outside ode kdesupport. Phonon has disappeared to gitorious.org. For me KDE4 is past. To bad, since there are some nice programs with KDE (yes, I like kontact very well and have much data stored in a imap-server behind it) and others (k3b, digicam) which all do rely on KDE4 in the future. Which alternatives do we have? XFCE 4.6.1 is nearly a year old now, is there active development? Gnome? twm... -- Thomas Is it all bad only to me or do you feel same? -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/blfs-dev FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
