No, that's just for the email.  I always use text only for email. 
Docbook's <emphisis> is fine.  The example is OK.

Then we need to say that it's i?86 only.

There are a couple of style issues, but the content is looking pretty 
good.

Style issues:
  Blank line after 1st configure
  Change '- you can search' to just 'Search'.
  'to build for i486 use'   Add 'an' before i486.
