You must be kidding :) As I said just now, I think I was mistaken about what 'single' would do. Grub is certainly respecting init=/bin/bash when I add that to the command line. What you have overlooked is that I have a /boot partition full of kernels for 4 or 5 systems, and I've edited grub.cfg to make sense of what is available, safe in the knowledge that I could add extra options such as 'single' if I needed to.
