I had no trouble with the bootscripts and my experience building and installing the kernel were the same as yours. With your permission, I'd like to compile all of my build notes into one file and supplement them with yours (many of your solutions are far less clunky than mine), and then I'd like to host the compiled notes on my web site. Please let me know if that would be okay. I have some additional notes about scripting the builds and checking the script logs: I'll share those soon.
