I was finally able to complete the steps Armin outlined in his "Post LFS System configuration" e-mail from Dec. 21 with no issues using the Dec 21 version of the LFS systemd book. I was lazy though and just rebooted back into the host system and used the chroot environment to reinstall systemd.
