At one time, maybe 10 years ago, there was an effort to put the
packages in alphabetical order, but take into account dependencies.
That is why vim is last and less is sort-of in the middle.
So it appears. But is that sufficient reason for it remaining so?
Alphabetical order really makes very little sense. Utility, more so.
Less and vim are useful!
Given that it is so easy to access files from outside chroot with host
tools, I really don't want to change that. If there was a significant
problem, I think we would have heard about it before now.
Indeed, that's how I do it too. And one can reasonably argue that
anyone qualified to build LFS should find that obvious. It's helpful
to do as much as possible in the chroot--shouldn't be confusing, but
if it could be eliminated...
Call it an ulterior motive, but the second time through my package
manager wants to show me, "This is what I'll do to remove all these
files and directories I should, if you so choose." It's nice to
be able to page through that--as it is it has to use cat for Stage 2.
There is a "poor man" pager built in chapter 5 (with util-linux), whose
name is "more" (the ancestor of "less"...).
the search capabilities are very limited, but paging one page at a time
(using space bar) and one line at a time (using "enter" key) works.
