Nice, just ran into this.  I was going to play around with this a bit,
but wonder if PKG_CONFIG_PATH for tools would help simplify things, or
cause more issues.  (Posting prematurely because I am not sure when I
will get around to testing this.  Still have more changes in the
lfs-book mailing list to apply to my custom scripts)
