The GNU Libc documentation states to use a separate build directory. http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/manual/html_node/Configuring-and-compiling.html They may still have their reasons, and if all works fine with the build directory within the source tree, then I would see no reason to create a separate build directory outside the source tree. Perhaps the GCC and GNU Libc devs need to update the documentation. I haven't found the documentation for Binutils where it states to build in a separate build directory. It may be in the README or INSTALL file.
