I did take a quick look at that note in 7.5.1 before I posted.  It
applies if the procedure in the previous section was not used.

OK, I didn't read the persistent net rules at that stage, so for
that part your comment is tru.  I obviously misunderstood what the
bash script would do on a host using a new-style name.

The note also talks of running ip link after booting - by that stage
I will have already seen the name in the error messages, because I
had created ifconfig.etho.

Funnily, I have not needed to add net.fnames=0 for a long while
(building from LFS) because everything just worked.
