From the point of view of the earlier posts from here (incl refs,
re versioning) to earlier discussion on version-bumps: I'd say that
there is enough of an ~api change, to warrant a new major version.

(This is as distinct from any number of spurious 'reasons'. And, it
helps keep b/lfs version numbers having a meaning.)
