FYI, I'm maintaining a CLFS system (x86/x86_64) since almost 10 years.
My experience is that it is quite a bit of additonal work (eg, my latest
problem: webkitgtk 2.17.9{1,2} doesn't build in ABI32, for some reason;
2.17.90 did build without problems, though: fix needed!; ABI64: no
problem whatsoever)
The positive aspect is that maintaining a multilib system makes you
learn more things.
If your goal is to build a single (or a couple of) software
pieces in ABI32 for some reason, I'd suggest to make the minimum effort
(which, however, isn't that small) to get there (libc plus cross
compiler/linker plus needed libs).
Otherwise, if your purpose is to build a complete multilib system, then
just start from scratch and go with CLFS.
