I only did that once to anticipate the upcoming need for C++ when building gcc. Actually, everybody thought that we would have to move to a three-pass build, and the libstdc++ trick allowed to keep only two passes. But I can tell you that it took a lot of "blood, toil, tears and sweat" before coming up with the current solution! Eventually, it was ready when 4.8 came out, which would not have been possible without working with svn...
