With respect, most people don't have a problem with this.

You're still in chapter 5 ? How do you think you're going to build a
toolchain in chapter 6 if you keep deleting the tarballs ? Mike, please
have a look at what is coming later in the book. If you need to
download the packages for building LFS, please try to keep the tarballs
around until you have finished. (Some of us have local copies on nfs
mounts, or CDs, or whatever, so we don't have to download for each
build.) But even so, you can still download them again using the host
system, no ?
Many people make mistakes while building LFS. A lot of us build a
newer LFS a bit later (and not every package is upgraded frequently).
Throwing away the source tarball just because we've used it only slows
us down.

gcc-{core,g++,test} and the full gcc are *alternatives* for LFS. In
LFS we only compile c and c++ so we don't need other languages like
fortran or ada or gcj or whatever. So, you can finish LFS without
downloading gcc again.

No, you've been over-enthusiastic in deleting more than you should
have, but you've still got some sort of net access (otherwise you
couldn't post here), so you can still download the source again.
