Update. I rebuilt glibc outside of the chroot, i.e Chapter 5 and ran `make check` on that I still got the same error so I decided it may be a glibc kernel interactions. As my running kernel is far newer than the glibc I was trying to use.
Given that current svn version of LFS included udev-056, syslog-ng and 2.6.11.5 kernel, I have nuked my LFS partition and am building svn version. For those that are interested when I ran `make check` on glibc in chapter 5 of svn version of the book, I no longer got the posix/wordexp-test error mentioned in my previous post.
