In our terms, 2.4.22 is /insanely/ old. If you are running on very
obscure hardware, there may be good reasons to use older kernels, but
then you can pretty much guarantee that lfs hasn't been tested on that
hardware. Specifically, there were a whole raft of security issues with
kernels between 2.4.22 and 2.4.2{5,6} (I can remember that because I was
using obscure hardware and trying to back-port the fixes - it's a mug's
game)

Generally, 2.6 kernels now mostly run better than 2.4 kernels on all
recent processors.

Thanks, my PC is a Pentium Celeron 266MHz eMachine. I want to use old kernel because this machine is sort of old, (or is it as you see?), I must turn off DMA in order to use CDROM.

I want to minimize the hassel as Linux build is new to me, a more stable and bug-less version is the key point. If 2.6 kernel is actually good, then among LFS 5.0, 5.1.1 and 6.0, which is the best fit for me?

Thanks.

Well, my experience is that 6.0 is more delicate to build. Thereby I must admit I've followed the testing/SVN path. Maybe that's the reason. But still, I find newer versions of gcc and glibc very unforgiving for hardware glitches or little typo's. With the strangest results. (something more likely with older hardware) Before I had it right I've had to go trough 5 or 6 tries. (and my hardware is fine.)
I would advice you 5.1.1 but I also understand that nobody likes to run Win-3.11 when XP is available. (to make for a nice comparison ;) ). In fact it doesn't compare at all.

Either way, I hope you're not married cause your love life is going to suffer. But it's worth it. Logging in for the first time is just great. You're own machine, and you know every corner of it.

Good luck
