You didn't get a response the first time because nobody here recognises
the error. Google dug up a similar problem building LFS under VM ware
(without any apparent answer), a similar problem cross-building glibc
under 'crosstool', and perhaps a similar error in LFS-5 (but that was on
a forum page which seemed to contain all sorts of unrelated problems).
The common theme seems to be that something is seriously wrong. Do you
have /dev/{console,null,zero} in chroot ? (if you don't, maybe sysfs
isn't mounted).
Failing that, maybe search.linuxfromscratch.org can provide a pointer.
