Thanks Jason, I'd never heard of lumberjack before, but upon investigation,
I had to smile at the man page:

BUGS
Probably signals syslogd more than it should.
Hardcodes several paths for syslog.pid and gzip. Each path is searched until
a match is found or we run out of paths to try.
Cuts down trees, wears high heels, suspenders and a bra. Wants to be a
girlie...
