A had to build the kernel 3 or 4 times to get it working right. I followed a similar route and started from the FC3 config. Way too bloated. Then I found that if you do make defconfig before make menuconfig, you'll be starting from some default that has almost no modules. Of course, this still doesn't change the fact that you have to figure out what's needed for your hardware. I personally have no idea what's needed for a VM.
