I think Simon's remark is a good point to start.
I installed twice today,in two different installations, the following
combination.

#-------------------------------#
cairo-1.0.0 (*Remark* for gcc4.0.1 builders and BLFS editors.
With "-O3" in CFLAFS,cairo failed for me)
pango-1.10.0 (Pango needs to be built against cairo, otherwise the gtk+
configure script will fail).
glib-2.8.1
atk-1.10.1
gtk+-2.8.3
#-------------------------------#

However i had two failures, both came from the same reason, and i will
explain.
I was trying to update the packages with the DESTDIR method, that means i
install first in an empty directory, then i create a package and i unpack in the
root directory.

The all problem started because the old *so didn't replaced during the unpack,
so the *so links still linked to the old (unremoved) libraries, and of cource
because
the old libraries was still present,it seems that some or all the packages were
builted against the old libraries.

I had to remove all the previous installed libraries first and rebuilt
from scratch.

My two failures.
First in the configure gtk+ script, which was trying to link to the old pango
libraries instead of the new version, and then during the gtk+ build, for exactly
the same reason, but this time with glib,so gtk+ build failed.

I really don't know if all these are related to your problem, but if i was you
i would removed all the libraries first, included the *so links and i
would started again.

To be honest i was ready to quit when i had the idea (stupid me i had to do it
from the
very first time) to look into gtk mailing list and the lucky bastard i found
the same
(novice) problem in July's archives.

Good luck.
