[Requesting program interpreter: /tools/lib/ld-linux.so.2]

I think I'm confused by your problem - whereabouts in the book are you
? My initial assumption was chapter 6 binutils.

I am in chapter 5, first build of binutils.
While i think about it, shouldnt it use the ld-linux from my host system
at this stage?

In that case, how do you have a reference to /tools/lib/ld-linux.so.2 ? Either you still have things left over from a previous attempt, or perhaps you used the pass2 binutils instructions, or perhaps /tools is a directory from when you built the current LFS. You are right at the beginning of the build, at this point nothing should have been installed anywhere.

So, please confirm that /tools is a symlink to /mnt/lfs/tools, then rm -rf /tools/* to get rid of whatever junk is living there. [ if it isn't a symlink, rename it to e.g. /tools.old and then make the symlink ]
