great ! I corrected the -D definition and recompile the perl5, now the core util builds.

Looks like your chapter 5 perl had something wrong with the -Dstatic_ext definition (easily done, unfortunately passing a definition in this way allows you to pass a wrong definition without it triggering any error checks).
